The Ravine
Informasjon fra forlaget
The Ravine. A strikingly original book about a terrible photograph - an exceptionally rare 'action shot' documenting the horrific final moment of the murder of a family in Ukraine, 1941. Photographic images of the Holocaust are very rare. The perpetrators were careful to avoid leaving visual evidence of what they did in Poland and the Soviet Union during and after the summer of 1941. But Wendy Lower discovered an old print that captured the moment a woman and child were shot and pushed into a pit by two riflemen, while another uniformed figure looks complacently on. This was the early phase of the genocide, the period that's now known as 'the Holocaust by bullet'. Through diligent research in archives and interviews with descendants and survivors in the Ukraine, Slovakia and the USA, Wendy Lower was able to identify the place, the time and the identity of the shooters and victims. The place was a small town called Miropol in the Ukraine. Perhaps 2-400 Jews were shot and buried in a deep ravine in the nearby forest in the autumn of 1941. The killers were local Ukrainians recruited into a militia by the Nazis. The German supervising them was a German customs guard, a member of a platoon of such excise agents stationed in the town and drafted in to help with the mass killing - an 'ordinary man' (in Christopher Browning's famous phrase) par excellence. One of Lower's most surprising discoveries was the identity of the photographer. He was a Slovak, Lubomir Skrovina, sent to the eastern front, as a reluctant member of a security division, by the puppet Slovak government led by Fr Jozef Tiso. But Skrovina was also a member of the Slovak resistance, and fully intended to use his photographs as evidence of the atrocities he witnessed. He smuggled them home. Lower was able to identify and trace the camera he carried that day, a good quality German Zeiss Ikon, and held it in her hands. The Ravine is a unique excavation of the truth behind a single image of atrocity.
