South Africa. South Africa is a sort of in-depth study of the Dark Continent, wrapped up in a single country, but it is also something more - a meeting place between people of radically different cultures who share problems and dreams. This is the future of Africa. The environment is magnificent; two oceans, the Atlantic and the Indian, meet at Cape Town, a metropolis that still has the allure of its centuries as the 'Tavern of the Seas.' From here, looking southward, one can see the vast rows of Antarctic waves tossed by the winds of the Roaring Forties. The hinterland of the Cape Province is the Karoo, a barren wasteland of scrub and brush that extends across nearly half of the entire nation, and yet this is the home of the Boers, farmers and ranchers of Dutch origin who colonized this area beginning in 1652. South Africa is more ancient than that; here one finds the oldest rocks on the planet and the earliest traces of life on Earth. Farther east are the savannas of the great beasts; lions, leopards, and cheetahs still inhabit game reserves and natural parks, along with elephants, giraffes, antelopes, and the entire natural paradise of Africa. The coastlines feature beaches and jagged cliffs, flowering dunes as in Namaqualand, and the coral reefs and lagoons of Saint Lucia. Nothing is static in South Africa, even its deserts change with the season. In this 'separate world,' where thousands of years ago the evolution of the human race began, forty million people now live; the remarkable variety of physical and cultural types of these people make South Africa a veritable anthropological laboratory, as well as a challenge for peaceful coexistence, beyond any differences.
